Can the Gas Be Saved by Half Opening the Valve?

Dec 02, 2020
Don't expect that the gas can be saved if the gas valve is opened half. In fact, it is ok that the gas device is not damaged.

Although using gas for cooking is cheaper than using other energy sources, a lot of gas is consumed every month. Recently, a friend said that if you only open half the main gas valve, the gas can be saved. Actually, many friends have followed this practice. In this regard, I am very worried, how can there be such a practice? Therefore, can we save gas by opening half the valve? What are the problems? Today we're going to talk about this issue.

Can gas saving be achieved by half opening the gas valve?
First of all, we can't save gas if we open the gas valve half way. The main reasons are as follows:

1. The measurement of gas meter is volume measurement.
At present, most of the gas meters used by residents are in skin mode. This kind of gas meter is measured by the way of flowing through the gas volume, that is, the two inner membrane cavities with fixed volume are filled with one cavity and then flow to the other cavity, so as to drive the mechanical structure to count and measure. Therefore, no matter how small the gas valve is opened, it will fill the cavity, that is, all accounting measurement. Therefore, even if our gas valves are half opened, the gas meter is normal counting. Don't think that the gas meter will count less. Of course, it has nothing to do with saving gas.

2. Energy conservation: the used gas quantity will generate the equivalent heat.
Some people think that if we turn down the gas valve a little, the gas will flow slowly. Then, the natural gas will be saved. If the gas valve is turned down, the gas flow will be small, but at the same time, we can also think that the heat generated by the combustion of our gas stoves will be less. Originally, the strong firepower can make us boil a pot of water in three minutes, but when we turn down the valve, we can not open it for five minutes. The total amount of gas used can only be more than that.

Therefore, combining these two aspects, half opening the gas valve can not save gas. However, what worries me is not whether to save gas or not. What's more, if the gas valve is only half opened, there will be many hidden dangers. There will be harm as follows if gas valve is only half opened.

1. If the valve is half opened for a long time, the sealing performance of the valve will be damaged.
Most of our gas valves are copper ball valves. The biggest advantage of this kind of valve is that it can quickly cut off or open the air source. The valve handle can be turned on or off by 90 ° rotations. It has good sealing performance, so it is widely used in gas system. However, the valve core of this kind of valve is spherical, and the sealing material is around the ball. Therefore, when the valve is fully closed and fully opened, the ball type valve core just insulates the contact between the sealing material and the gas can prevent it from corrosion and erosion. However, in the half open state, the ball valve core can not completely isolate the contact between the gas and the sealing material. If the time is long, it is easy to cause the corrosion or erosion of the sealing material, which is to cause the valve to close tightly, that is to say, the valve is damaged. In this way, if there is an emergency in the process of using gas and the valve is not closed tightly, it is very dangerous.

2. The gas consuming device cannot burn normally.
The gas device in our house is manufactured according to the national standard. Some heat load indexes and thermal efficiency indexes can be realized under the standard gas supply pressure. Let's take the common gas stove as an example. If natural gas is used, the gas supply pressure in front of the stove is required to be 2000MPa, and the pipeline used is DN15. Normal gas engineering is also designed and installed according to this standard. If we half open the gas valve, it will be equivalent to the reduced pipe diameter, and the gas flow will naturally be less. The pressure in front of the stove will also drop. In this way, the gas stove designed and manufactured according to the standard will not work normally. The performance is that the combustion is not enough and the calorific value is low. Moreover, there will be the red flame, and the pot is blackened and a series of problems.

Sometimes, the valve is half opened. Maybe our gas stoves can still be used. However, if there are other gas water heaters, gas wall mounted heaters and other large gas consumption devices at home, it is likely that they can not work normally, and these gas device in the case of insufficient gas supply, is worse than the gas stove performance, even directly leading to device damage or reducing its service lives.

3. The gas valve cannot be closed in time.
What we often publicize and popularize is that the vertical gas pipeline of the gas valve handle is in the closed state, and the parallel gas pipeline is in the open state. The closing is generally clockwise, and the opening is counterclockwise, so the design is to facilitate the quick closing of the valve in case of emergency. If we leave the valve half opened, sometimes it is really difficult to judge whether the valve is closed or not. It is not easy to close the valve, and we even do not know which side to rotate. In this case, if we need to close the valve in case of emergency, there will be a great delay. People think that they have closed the valve, but it is still opened. Isn't there a big security risk?

To sum up, we only open half the gas valve. Such operation can not save gas, and the gas valve can't be used normally. What's more, there will be some potential safety hazards. Such a trick is harmful but not beneficial. We advise you not to do so.

If you really want to save some gas, it's better to start with our daily gas use habits and purchase some high performance gas equipment. Don't expect the gas valve to be half opened to save gas. It's better to open it normally and close it when it's not used.
